The Guilford Fire Department is proud to recognize several firefighter/EMTs and paramedics who were recently honored for their actions during multiple cardiac arrest emergencies that occurred throughout 2025. Through rapid response, advanced medical care, teamwork, and dedication to the community, these responders played a critical role in helping save the lives of three Guilford residents who ultimately made full recoveries and were discharged from the hospital.
The recognition was presented by the Yale New Haven Center for EMS during the 2026 EMS Week Celebration in New Haven, Connecticut. The event brings together emergency medical providers, survivors, and families from across the region to honor exceptional prehospital care and successful patient outcomes.
The following Guilford providers were recognized for their involvement in these life-saving incidents:
• Sean Marren
• Stephen Lapaglia
• The family of Michael Terrio
• John Planas
• Jason Beeker
• Daniel Post
• Dan O’Brien
• Chris Jump
• Wesley Matteson
In addition to the responding crews, two civilian bystanders who assisted during the emergencies were also recognized for their actions prior to the arrival of emergency personnel. Early intervention by bystanders, combined with rapid emergency response, high-quality CPR, defibrillation, and advanced life support measures, continues to play a major role in improving cardiac arrest survival rates.

Cardiac arrest saves represent the combined efforts of dispatchers, bystanders, firefighter/EMTs, paramedics, police officers, hospital staff, and medical coordinators working together as one team with a shared mission of saving lives.
The Guilford Fire Department remains committed to providing advanced emergency medical care to the community through continuous training, strong regional partnerships, and investment in emergency medical capabilities. These successful outcomes reflect the professionalism and dedication of the department’s emergency responders who serve the community every day.
The department congratulates all providers and responders involved in these incidents and thanks them for their commitment to protecting the residents of Guilford.
