Firefighter Dan O’Brien has reached a major milestone for the Town of Guilford and the Guilford Fire Department. He has received final approval from sponsor hospital medical control and is now cleared to operate as a practicing Firefighter Paramedic.
Dan began his career with the Guilford Fire Department on June 3, 2019 as a Firefighter EMT. From the start, he showed commitment to the job and the community. Two years ago, he stepped forward when the department needed more paramedics and took on one of the most demanding roles in emergency services.
Becoming a paramedic requires serious discipline. In Connecticut, paramedic training often takes 1,200 to 1,800 hours. That includes classroom instruction, clinical rotations in hospitals, and field internships on ambulances. Many candidates spend 12 to 24 months completing the process. The academic load is heavy. The clinical expectations are high. The failure rate is significant. It demands consistency, focus, and sacrifice.
Dan met that standard. He put in the time. He handled the long hours in the classroom and in the hospital. He trained in the field. He stayed committed through every phase of the process. Today, he earned the right to practice independently as a paramedic.
This achievement matters even more given the current conditions across the country. Fire departments and EMS agencies continue to face a shortage of paramedics. National data shows many systems are struggling to staff advanced life support units. Some departments report vacancy rates for paramedics exceeding 20 percent. Recruitment remains difficult. Retention remains a challenge. Departments rely on individuals who step up and take on this responsibility.
Dan did exactly that.
His work strengthens the Guilford Fire Department. It adds another paramedic to the roster. It improves response capability. It helps ensure residents receive advanced life support care when they need it most.

This accomplishment did not happen in isolation. It required support at home. We want to recognize and thank Dan’s wife, Sara, and his daughter, Rosemary, for their patience and support throughout this process. The time commitment for paramedic school affects the entire family. Their support played a direct role in his success.
The Town of Guilford and the Guilford Fire Department are proud of Firefighter Paramedic Dan O’Brien. His effort, discipline, and commitment reflect the values of this department and this community.
Congratulations, Dan.
