It is the mission of the Office of the Fire Marshal to protect our citizens, visitors and their property from the perils of fire, explosions, unsafe construction and other hazardous conditions.
This mission will be accomplished through fire prevention education, fire investigations and compliance inspections following the applicable regulations of the Town of Guilford and the State of Connecticut. We will actively participate with our community, serve as role models, and strive to effectively and efficiently utilize all resources made available, to provide safety and excellent customer service to the citizens and visitors of the Town of Guilford.
Fire prevention is carried out by speaking to civic groups, schools, town councils, community groups, and others on the subject of fire prevention and emergency operations. The Office of The Fire Marshal also assists The Guilford Fire Department with conducting pre-plan evaluations of most occupanies in town. This process entails the collection of important data about the building for firefighters to use during emergency operations.

Smoke Alarm Safety Tips
Smoke alarms should generally be replaced every 10 years. Check the manufacture date printed on the back of each alarm, especially if your home or alarms are more than 10 years old.
Test every smoke alarm in your home once a month by pressing and holding the test button.
Replace alarm batteries at least once a year or whenever the low-battery warning sounds. Alarms equipped with sealed 10-year batteries do not require routine battery replacement.
Keep smoke alarms clean and working properly by occasionally using a vacuum or soft brush attachment to remove dust. Never paint over or place decorations on an alarm.
-
Keep exits, hallways, and stairways clear of clutter and stored equipment.
Keep fire extinguishers, alarm pull stations, and electrical panels accessible.
Keep fire doors closed and never prop them open.
Remove trash and combustible waste regularly.
Store flammable materials properly and away from heat sources.
Check electrical cords for damage and avoid overloading outlets.
Use extension cords only temporarily.
Turn off unused appliances and equipment as appropriate.
Know evacuation routes and the designated outdoor meeting location.
Report fire hazards and damaged safety equipment promptly.
