Boater rescued from stormy waters off Guilford

GUILFORD >> One person was rescued from a 32-foot sailboat in the water off Leetes Island Road early Wednesday morning.

The person’s boat was anchored in a cove when strong winds about midnight began to drag the vessel toward a rocky area, Coast Guard spokesperson Jetta Disco said. The boater then contacted the Coast Guard over his radio.

The Coast Guard and the Guilford Fire Department responded, and the fire department removed the person from the vessel with no injuries.

“The weather definitely played a role in [the incident],” Disco said. “It was pretty stormy when we were trying to rescue him.”

The operator of the boat was able to reclaim it without incident this morning, and there was no pollution of the water around the area, she said.
